Whether you are meeting with a new client for the first time or cultivating a relationship with an existing client, your office space and how you conduct your meeting will make a difference.
It is critical that you know what clients look for when they attend meetings, and most importantly, those tidbits that could turn them away and make it impossible to close your deal.

5 Things that Clients Notice in Your Meetings

1. Talking More than Listening
Clients are there to engage your expertise, but you are there to solve their problems. If the entire meeting focuses on you with little input from your client, they may go elsewhere. Clients want people who listen to them, are concerned about their message and know everything their client needs them to know to fulfill their deal.
2. Your Demeanor and Tone
Now is the time to set the tone of the entire meeting, and the tone should be positive. Having an upbeat attitude goes far with first impressions. A client will feel attracted to your spirit and energy. The more positive you are about your services, solutions, or how you can help a client, the better.
Also, give yourself a pre-meeting pep talk. If you are feeling a little nervous, consider doing a power pose right before the meeting. Power poses are quite effective, and social psychologist Amy Cuddy shared her research at the TEDGlobal 2012 event about how standing and sitting in certain ways immediately spark a chemical response in your body.
Some poses that might help boost your meeting appeal include:

  • The Loomer: Planting your hands on the table and leaning forward to close a deal.
  • The Performer: Before the meeting, plant your feet widely and stretch your hands above your head in a V-shape to help you soak up the “applause” for your performance.
  • The Wonder Woman: Channel your superhero, stand tall, puff out your chest and plant your hands on your hips with your feet apart. This crime-fighting pose lessens anxiety and gives you a sense of control.

3. Your Attire
You need to dress the part. While that doesn’t mean you must dress in a three-piece suit, dress for the services and type of client you are entertaining. If you offer high-end services and your customers are higher class, coming to the meeting in casual attire could reduce your perceived level of professionalism.
So, dress the part. Naturally, in today’s tech-driven and Millennial workforce, casual attire is becoming the new norm. However, if your clients are not in that same mindset, they may be offended that you showed up to an important meeting in your Levi’s.
4. The Workplace Atmosphere and Inspiration
